Play Priorities

A nearby historic water mill was the inspiration for this public playground designed by EPCAD, for Stockland’s $3 million Aviary Creek Park in the master-planned community of The Vale, in the Perth suburb of Aveley.

The Giant Water Wheel playground is a family favourite at the 6.7ha site centred around two interconnected lakes, also featuring a yoga platform, bocce court, boardwalks, seating and barbecue areas.

The one-of-a-kind playground is a fun, dynamic and creative space which will cater to the young and young at heart for many years to come. Situated in public parkland, it provides active, contemplative and gathering spaces for all, in the fast-growing suburb of Western Australia’s capital.

Fun Solution

With a clean slate to work from, the EPCAD team created an active, fun-filled playground for children and teenagers as part of their overall park design, inspired by the local environment and history.

The Giant Waterwheel is a fitting centre piece. Split into two climbing levels, there are two tube and chute slides specifically designed for the site by Playground Centre – one which  goes through a stone-accented wall to bring everyone back to earth. A second climbing structure features a third tube and chute slide, along with a double embankment slide for toddlers.

The historic theme flows into the combined water play and sand pit area, featuring a sand digger, sand channel, and two stainless steel trough systems featuring hand pumps and water wheel.

The Viking Snake Swing, constructed with Douglas Fir timber posts, steel post shoes and a chunky plaited rope, was a later addition to the playground. An anti-climb barrier provides an extra level of safety.
