“I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you for all your help and patience with the Awanui playground project. Our team and more importantly the kids are absolutely wrapped with the finished product. "The bomb" from one of the local kids!”

Fauna Gregory, Far North District Council

Treasure trove unveiled for community.

A much-anticipated adventure playground worthy of the most swashbuckling sailor is welcoming all aboard in the small portside community of Awanui. In a nod to the area’s shipping history, the pirate-themed play space has proven a boon for local residents and a drawcard for tourists visiting the stunning coastlines of Cape Reinga.

Ahoy, me hearties!

What a pleasure to ‘parley’ with the Te Hiku Community Board and Far North District Council to make their vision of a bright, fun and inclusive playground, with a particular focus on younger children, a reality. The long-overdue play space renovation includes wheelchair-accessible barbecue facilities from our long-term collaborators, Urban Effects.

The play space upgrade was part of the Te Hiku Revitalisation Open Spaces Project, which took out the top award at the 2022 LGFA Taituarā Local Government Excellence Awards and saw Awanui named the Most Beautiful Tiny Town in the 2023 Keep NZ Beautiful Awards.

Yo-ho-ho, what a booty!

Shiver me timbers, what an exciting and innovative focus the Merchant Play Ship with Pirate Tower gives this large play space, which is inclusive of multiple ages and abilities.

The three standalone parts of the unique ship enhance physical and social development with plenty of opportunities for climbing, sliding and imaginative adventure exploring the seven seas, including digging for treasure in the sand and ‘feeding’ hungry hoards at the Port Awanui store.

The Timber Double Traveller is another thrilling favourite, with its’ universal seating allowing children of all ages to fly along the 25m course. The Flying Saucer – Timba Triple Frame  also caters for the young and young-at-heart with a variety of seating, including an Expression Swing Seat for face-to-face fun between an adult and under-five year old.

Walk the plank and test your balance on the Stepping Logs Fitness Station,

Balance Beam Fitness Station (Timber) and Activity Trail 2124. Ride the rollicking waves on the Whirlpool Climbing Carousel , the Waka Seesaw and 4-Seater Starfish Rocker, before composing a sea shanty on the Rainbow Bongos.

Cook up a feast with the Urban Contour Double BBQ, the ultimate user-friendly barbecue for larger gatherings, with a specially designed cabinet to cater for wheelchair users and a large bench top with plenty of room for all. There is plenty of family seating and upgraded toilet facilities feature artwork from local artist Māori Erstich.
