Play Priorities
The Auckland City Council embarked on the upgrade of the playground in Commissariat Reserve in Mt Wellington in response to calls from local parents who saw the need for a playspace that catered for a wider range of age groups.
The product of close consultation with local residents, the new, more inclusive playground includes a clever combination of play equipment which specifically targets children from toddlers to tweens (and above). The playground also has a ‘green theme’, with the design of the equipment drawing inspiration from the tree-lined reserve and one of the biggest trends in outdoor play, nature play.
Fun Solution
The Commissariat Reserve playground has loads of appeal. It’s a visually stunning playground that’s filled with high quality equipment crafted in New Zealand from locally sourced timbers that’s complemented by brilliant green features.
We custom-built the 2.8 metre tower and massive tube slide, using our high-tech design software to create a super-fast slide that’s a major drawcard for the park. We also got creative with the tower structure. The tower is made from tall ‘tree trunks’ and fitted with multiple ways to scale it – just like climbing a tree.
Mindful of the community’s desire to encourage younger and older kids to engage in active, outdoor play the big slide was designed with 6-12 year olds in mind and we installed the smaller SC384 Timber Module tower and slide combo for the little ones.
The variety of age-targeted equipment continues throughout the playground. The Starfish Rocker and swings are perfect for parents with younger kids, while the rope course and super-cool Log Bridge Fitness Station offer fun and fitness for older kids (and adults).
